In the early 2000s, the name Russell Brand was all over the headlines…. In the UK at least. Some journalists described him as a sex maniac, others described him as a charming provocateur. To me though, as a small teenage boy growing up in London, seeing a confident, surprisingly well-spoken Svengali plucked straight out of a Shakespearean play and almost always surrounded by beautiful women was something to be admired. The tabloids hated him, your nan probably did too, but for me, I saw a reflection of what my future could possibly look like and I was quietly excited. I’m not proud of admitting that, but hey, it is what it is.
To the chagrin of many conservative and liberal types alike, Russell Brand proudly talked about his sexual escapades on stage, in books and even radio shows. In 2008 one of these controversial radio shows even came close to destroying his career for good and eventually forced renowned TV Host Jonathan Ross off the BBC. To quote the great Charlie Murphy, Russell was a habitual line stepper, but many still loved him for it.
So when sexual assault allegations against the comedian hit the news, I was surprised but not exactly astounded. Now I’m not suggesting he did it, but as stated in an earlier video, there is sometimes a fine line between sexual promiscuity and sexual assault.
Recently, many theories have come out as to why Russell is being accused of these heinous crimes and why The Sunday Times, The Times & Channel 4 Dispatches would all work together to investigate these serious claims. Some individuals have even suggested that Russell’s online presence and audience is so big and far-reaching, that mainstream media are perhaps jealous and annoyed that Brand’s conspiracy laden content is driving people from mainstream news and into the hands of alternative media.
As of right now, Youtube has demonetised Brand’s videos but the online video platform Rumble, is continuing to allow Russell to monetise his content on their site. Russell has also been dropped by his agent Tavistock Wood and even an upcoming Australian festival. This is all rather sad, especially since we don’t currently have concrete evidence that these allegations actually took place, but what I will say is that if this is real, my heart goes out to these women. It is a bit odd that these alleged victims have waited until now to come forward but as stated in an earlier video, I do understand.
Anyway, I hope the facts eventually come out and I hope all parties involved can eventually come to a peaceful resolution. Russell Brand is a legend, it would be a damn shame to see him go down like this.
